Barriers
Pool and Spa Barrier Standards
Pool and spa barrier work is a compliance category. A pool cleaner, technician, electrician, plumber or gasfitter is not automatically a barrier inspector.
Barrier inspection and certification usually sit with building surveyors, building inspectors or pool safety inspectors, depending on the state or territory.
Pump, heater, filter or spa equipment work does not prove authority to certify pool or spa barriers.
Ask which law, registration or inspector category allows the person to inspect or certify the barrier.
Standards layer
Barrier standards and regulator references
Barrier rules are state and territory matters, but AS 1926.1 is a key technical reference where adopted by law or building approval.
| Work or issue | Standard, regulator or reference | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Pool and spa safety barriers | AS 1926.1-2012 Swimming pool safety - Safety barriers for swimming pools | Primary standards reference for swimming pool and spa safety barriers. |
| Victorian barrier guidance | Pool safety barriers | BPC states that new pools, spas and safety barriers must comply with AS1926.1-2012. |
| Building code context | National Construction Code | Use where barrier requirements interact with building approvals and the NCC. |
| Standards and law context | What is a Standard / Standards and the Law | Use to explain that standards may become mandatory when referenced in legislation. |
Do not treat barrier work as ordinary pool service
Cleaning, water testing, pool equipment service or spa repair experience does not prove authority to inspect or certify a safety barrier. Use the state or territory regulator and council process for the property.
