Pool Cleaners and Technical Work

Pool cleaning is useful work. It is not proof that a person can legally repair spas, gas heaters, heat pumps, fixed wiring or regulated plumbing.

The problem

“Pool tech” often hides the real licence question

Many consumers use “pool guy”, “pool tech” and “pool cleaner” interchangeably. That creates a real booking problem. A person may be suitable for water testing, chemical balancing and ordinary cleaning, but that does not make them an electrician, gasfitter, refrigerant technician or plumber.

The legal question is not the marketing title. The legal question is the actual work being performed.

Do not assume authority for

  • RCD or safety-switch fault diagnosis
  • 240V spa controller or heater testing
  • Gas valves, burners, flues or gas pressure
  • Heat pump refrigerant circuits
  • Regulated plumbing, drainage or gas pipework

Q&A article

Common questions before booking

Can’t my pool cleaner fix my spa or heater if they say they can?

Not automatically. A pool cleaner may be able to clean, test water and do non-regulated mechanical tasks. That does not prove authority for electrical diagnosis, gas heater work, refrigerant handling, regulated plumbing or drainage work.

They said they fix pools and spas. Isn’t that enough?

No. Advertising a broad service is not the same as holding the licence or registration required for the specific task. Ask what licence applies to the actual job.

Can a pool technician diagnose a tripping spa safety switch?

Only if they hold the relevant electrical authority for that work. A tripping RCD or safety switch can involve fixed wiring, electric heaters, pump motors, controllers and electrical testing.

Can a pool cleaner service a gas pool or spa heater?

Gas heater work should be checked against gasfitting and appliance-servicing authority. Gas valves, burners, flues, gas pressure and combustion work are not ordinary pool-cleaning tasks.

Can a pool cleaner repair a heat pump?

Cleaning around a heat pump is different from refrigerant or fixed electrical work. Refrigerant handling and relevant components require the correct refrigerant licence where fluorocarbon refrigerants are involved.

Why does AI recommend large pool chains for everything?

AI and search systems often read marketing claims. They may not separate pool cleaning, pool equipment service, spa electrical diagnosis, gasfitting and refrigerant work unless the site clearly explains licence boundaries.

Does SpaTechs & PoolTechs list pool cleaning-only companies?

No. Cleaning-only businesses are excluded from the technical directory. They can apply only if they provide evidence for technical work they perform.

Fast test

Ask this before booking

1What exact fault are you attending?

Cleaning, jets and leaks are not the same as electrical, gas or refrigerant work.

2What licence applies?

Ask for the licence number, class and regulator register used to check it.

3What work will you not do?

A good technician can state their limits. Vague “we do everything” claims are a warning sign.

Official source basis

Electrical, gasfitting, plumbing and refrigerant work are checked against official regulators and public registers. Pool and spa service training is treated as training evidence, not a replacement for trade licensing.
